Foto Wide World photograph of the American actor shaking hands with Pope Pius XII during a 1953 family vacation to Italy.  A Spanish-language press clipping to verso reads "His Holiness Pope Pius XII shakes the hand of famous Hollywood actor Gary Cooper, after the benediction, during an audience granted to the actor, his wife Sandra Shaw, and her sister Verónica.  The Coopers were on vacation in Italy."  Stamp to verso from the archives of the Havana-based magazine Bohemia, dated July 19, 1953.  Curiously, neither Cooper nor Shaw had a sister named Veronica, though that was Shaw's real first name.  Mounting remnants to verso, else in fine condition.  8 x 6.5 inches (20.3 x 16.5 cm.). "God Bless Our Home"

Decorative folk art hand-painted sign in the style of an illuminated page that reads  "GOD BLESS OUR HOME." Gilt and polychrome pigment font bordered with leaf and twigs, contained in a rustic handmade frame.  Frame backing slightly loose; overall in fine condition.  Sight 10 x 12 inches (25.4 x 30.5 cm.); framed to an overall size of 15 x 17 inches (38 x 43.2 cm.).

Typed Letter Signed to "Leslie's Weekly"

Typed letter signed from the Archbishop of Baltimore to Perriton Maxwell, editor of Leslie's Weekly, calling the magazine "one of the oldest, most honorable and most respected of our American periodicals" and congratulating it on its 65th anniversary. Dated November 9, 1920, on letterhead of the Baltimore Cathedral. Folding creases and light toning; overall fine. 8.5 x 7 inches (21.5 x 17.8 cm).

Collection of four 18th century rigid paper cards printed to recto and verso with proverbs and aphorisms.  Origin unknown. Foxing, else fine.  3 x 5 inches each (7.6 x 12.7 cm.).

Portrait of Saint Cecilia with Relics, ca. 17th Century

Extraordinary gouache, watercolour, gilt and gold leaf on openwork cut pattern in parchment, backed with tissue, pearls and embroidery with gold and silver thread, depicting the patron saint of music and musicians.  In the centre cartouche, Saint Cecilia is pictured holding a portative organ, and is surrounded with the openwork painted pattern within a painted floral border, some openings in the frame providing a place for the deposit of reliquary fragments, some of which are here still preserved (!). 12.4 x 10.4 inches (31.6 x 26.4 cm). Mounted to cardboard backing, some worming and mildew damage to mounting, a few small chips, overall in fine condition. An impressive and graphically striking piece of devotionalia.

Fantastic original press photograph ca. 1960 of two men playing rock music and dancing in an English church. Press caption on the verso reads: "Keeping abreast of the times are the mobile missionaries of the Methodist Church in the Doncaster area. During a Sunday afternoon service-with-a-difference, at the Parkside Church near Doncaster, the Rev. Brian Webb takes to the piano and colleague and fellow caravanner Cyril Blount gives a performance of Rock 'n' Roll to the congregation." In fine condition. 20.5 x 25.5 cm.

Autograph Dialogue and Two Autograph Poems

Three autograph documents, two poems and a dialogue, from the highly influential French writer and philosopher, known as a key figure in existentialism.  The texts are written on small notebook leaves, and come from the collection of Michelle Vian, one of Sartre's long-term mistresses who remained close to him throughout the later years of his life.  The first poem, a nonsense rhyme, begins: "En Afghanistan / Il y avait un Khan..."  The second document is a dialogue or fragment of a dialogue between two characters, Negrine and Stephane, with a note on the verso in another hand.  Finally, a nonsense song penned in an unknown hand, "Je suis un con... un con... un con... / Con d'avoir composé cett' chanson / Cette chanson... / faite par un con / pour....our charmer les cons..." ("I am an idiot... an idiot... an idiot..An idiot for having composed this song / This song / composed for an idiot / to...charm idiots.") dated July 27, 1957, most probably Sartre's text penned in the hand of his lover, Michelle Vian. Each on a notebook leaf, 9 x 15 cm.  Slight toning; otherwise in fine condition.
